Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions…

They’re not actually frequently asked, because no one has even known that we existed until now, but if we were to expect frequently asked questions, here are some.

Why do I wait a week to get my roasted coffee?

Coffee has a peak drinking time from 1-3 weeks. Brewing coffee right after it is roasted will taste flat, and coffee that is too old deteriorates and loses its flavor.

Why do you not offer ground beans?

If you really want to enjoy specialty coffee, the most essential thing is to grind it right before you brew it. Since coffee loses its flavor as it sits, imagine how quickly that happens when you grind that coffee up into tiny little beans. Any grinder to grind your fresh coffee — yes, even a blade grinder — is better than buying pre-ground coffee.

What is single origin coffee?

Single origin coffee is coffee that comes from one specific region or even a farm. The benefit of single origin coffee is the unique flavors you can get versus what a blend typically offers. Single origin coffees are also typically higher quality coffees that come from smaller farmers, and grown in more sustainable ways.

Explain your coffee bag label to me. What do these things mean?

Each of our coffee labels will tell you where the coffee is from, origin, along with tasting notes, things your brain might think of as you drink the coffee. In addition to that, we will tell you how the coffee was processed, washed or dry/natural. How a coffee is processed makes a big difference on the flavor of the coffee. Coffee is a cherry, and the bean we roast is the seed inside. When the cherry is harvested, that bean has to be removed. Wet process coffee removes the bean from the cherry right after harvesting by putting the coffee cherry through a machine that removes the pulp of the cherry, then the beans are washed with water before drying. Wet process coffees are cleaner and more refined in their flavors. A dry process coffee has the bean left inside the cherry for several weeks while the cherry dries in the sun. Once dried, the bean is removed from the cherry. Dry process coffee are often more unique and wild in their flavors.

Why can’t I pick what coffee I want?

Because I said so. Now that’s the answer I often give to my children, but I won’t treat you like a child. When you sign up for our subscription service, we become your personal coffee curators, and you trust us to find and roast you delicious coffees. In the end, we hope you come to enjoy the same coffees we do, some of which you may not have ever thought to try yourself.

Why can’t you sell outside of Colorado?

Because the government won’t let me. We’re operating under the cottage industries law in Colorado, which allows us to sell coffee without having all of the licensing that would be needed if we were to sell out of the state. When demand is going through the roof for our coffee, maybe we’ll become a big boy company and be able to sell outside the borders of the state. However, you’re always welcome to drive into our lovely state and buy some beans.
